About
IIT Kharagpur was established in May 1950 as the first Indian Institute of Technology, initially operating out of the historic Hijli Detention Camp. It was later declared an Institute of National Importance by the Parliament of India in 1956 and has grown into a vast campus spanning 2100 acres with a self-contained township.
